TRAUMA-FOCUSED COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

(TF-CBT)

Specialized, evidence-based support for healing from trauma — at your own pace, in your own way.

With the right care and team

Healing From Trauma Is Possible.

Trauma has a way of staying with us long after the event has passed — showing up in our thoughts, our bodies, our relationships, and our daily life. TF-CBT is one of the most researched and effective approaches for processing traumatic experiences and reducing the symptoms that follow. At Bloom, our TF-CBT trained counselors provide a safe, structured space to begin that healing.

what tf-cbt offers

Trauma-Informed Care That Honors Your Story

TF-CBT builds on the foundations of CBT but goes deeper — specifically designed to address the emotional and psychological impact of traumatic experiences. It’s particularly effective for PTSD, childhood trauma, abuse, grief, and traumatic loss, and is used with both children and adults.

At Bloom, every TF-CBT session is guided by your comfort level and your timeline. There is no pressure to revisit painful memories before you’re ready. Your counselor will walk alongside you with patience, expertise, and genuine care — helping you process what happened in a way that feels safe and sustainable.

What to Expect

What to Expect Sessions typically last 45–55 minutes and are available both in person at our Urbandale clinic and via telehealth. TF-CBT is a structured approach, but your counselor will always follow your lead — moving at whatever pace feels right for you.

Your first session focuses on getting to know you and building a foundation of trust before any trauma processing begins. You’ll work with your counselor to identify goals, build coping skills, and gradually work toward processing your experiences in a way that reduces their hold on your daily life.

TF-CBT typically involves several phases — building skills first, then processing, then integration. Many clients find that the structure itself feels grounding and reassuring throughout the process.

Have Questions?

We Have Answers!

If your question wasn’t answered here, or you’d like more information before booking an appointment please reach out via our contact form, or give us a call. We will make sure you have everything you need to make your decision.

What is TF-CBT and how is it different from regular CBT?

TF-CBT — Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — builds on the principles of CBT but is specifically designed to address trauma and its effects. While CBT focuses broadly on unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors, TF-CBT focuses more directly on the impact of traumatic experiences and is structured to help reduce PTSD symptoms.

Who is TF-CBT for?

TF-CBT is effective for children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma — including abuse, neglect, loss, grief, accidents, medical trauma, birth trauma, or other distressing events. It’s one of the most well-researched trauma treatments available and is used across a wide range of experiences and age groups.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

Not right away — and never before you’re ready. TF-CBT begins with building coping skills and a strong therapeutic relationship before any trauma processing begins. Your counselor will always follow your pace and comfort level throughout.

How long does TF-CBT take?

TF-CBT is typically structured over 12–25 sessions, though the timeline varies depending on the nature of the trauma and your individual goals. Your counselor will work with you to create a plan that feels realistic and supportive.

Is TF-CBT available via telehealth?

Yes — many of our counselors offer both telehealth and in-person sessions. You can filter by session type when booking your appointment online.

Does Bloom accept insurance for TF-CBT sessions?

Yes — we accept Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Midland’s Choice, Cigna, Health Partners, and Tricare. We directly bill your insurance carrier and you’ll be responsible for any applicable copays or coinsurance. Visit our Payment Options page for more details.

What if I don't have insurance or my plan doesn't cover therapy?

We believe mental health care should be accessible to everyone. We offer a sliding fee scale whenever possible, private pay options, and accept CareCredit for out-of-pocket expenses. Reach out to our billing coordinator Mitch at mitch@bloomwomenswellness.org to discuss your options.
