Bloom Women’s Wellness

Holistic Mental Health Support

Providing hope and fostering growth to lead more empowered lives.

Addressing Mental Health Challenges

Mental health is multidimensional and a holistic approach to providing care considers each aspect of your wellness. While we offer perinatal and postpartum counseling, we always say that we’re generalists first and specialists second. We can explore your feelings and experiences in a safe, understanding space while working on a comprehensive care plan to support your path to wellness.

Common Perinatal & Postpartum Concerns

Anxiety and depression are believed to be some of the most common mental health concerns faced during pregnancy and after birth. Any number of factors can contribute to this, such as medical history, previous negative experiences with pregnancies, inadequate support, lack of sleep, and hormonal imbalances. Recognizing the problem is the first step. Together, we can address these concerns and more:

Perinatal Anxiety

Anxiety during pregnancy and up to 18 months after birth can manifest in many ways, including restlessness, tense moods, and rapid breathing.

Perinatal Depression

Depression during this time can look like crying, appetite changes, feeling disconnected from your baby, having problems sleeping, and more.

Postpartum Anxiety

If you’re experiencing fear, worry, and/or other anxious feelings after birth that disrupt your life, you may be dealing with a form of postpartum anxiety.

Postpartum Depression

It’s common to feel “down” after birth, but if these feelings persist and/or you feel hopeless, you may be experiencing postpartum depression.

OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is can present as intrusive thoughts and a compulsion to repeat tasks like cleaning or checking on your baby.

Pregnancy Loss

Losing a pregnancy can be traumatic and professional support can help you work through difficult feelings such as anxiety, depression, and anger.

Telehealth Counseling

An effective and secure option for therapy is telehealth counseling. I offer this option to all of my clients. It’s convenient if you don’t wish to travel to my practice in Urbandale, Iowa or if you’d simply feel more comfortable with a video therapy session. Your information will be safe and confidential with our HIPAA-compliant platform.

My Background

I am a licensed independent social worker (LISW) certified through Postpartum Support International (PSI). My primary focus is providing holistic, trauma-informed support as you navigate perinatal and postnatal life, but I also work with clients who are interested in addressing concerns outside of these specialties.

A Personal Journey

As a mother of two, I’ve experienced firsthand the gap in quality mental health care and the frustration of being unable to find the right support. The journey through pregnancy, birth, and welcoming a new baby to your life comes with a lot of change. Our bodies and minds are met with new challenges and it’s normal to experience anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. We can explore your feelings and experiences in a safe, understanding space while working on a comprehensive care plan to support your path to wellness.

Creating a Welcoming Environment

Everyone deserves access to a loving place where they’re able to express themselves freely and authentically without judgment. Bloom Women’s Wellness is here to be a welcoming place for all, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, culture, age, or religion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take insurance and how does that work?

We accept Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Welmark, and private pay. Because we believe that mental health care should be accessible, we are happy to work with you on a sliding fee scale.

Every insurance plan is different, so check with your provider to see if mental health coverage is included in yours. Look over your coverage thoroughly. You may also want to contact your insurance agent to verify your coverage. A few helpful questions are:

  • What are the mental health benefits in my plan?
  • What is the coverage amount per session?
  • How many therapy sessions are covered under my plan?
  • How much does my insurance plan pay for out-of-network providers?
  • Does my plan require approval from a primary care physician?

How can therapy help?

The goal of therapy is to provide a safe space for someone to explore their experiences, feelings, and thoughts in order to find realistic solutions. Psychotherapy can also be helpful in treating mental health concerns such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, addictions, and psychotic disorders. However, it’s important to note that therapy can benefit people who do not suffer from any of these concerns. Daily conflicts and life stressors can be difficult to navigate and therapy can help you find the tools to use to deal with these things in a healthier way.

How do I choose the best mental health provider?

The first step in finding the right provider for you is to find the professional whose focus areas line up with the concerns you would like to address. Next, be prepared to check your potential provider’s background, including their education. Depending on the educational background of the provider, their titles will differ. For instance, most counselors or psychotherapists hold master’s or doctoral degrees in the psychology field and may include licensed mental health counselors (LMHC), psychologists, licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT), and licensed independent social workers (LISW).

One of the most important parts of finding the best counselor for you is that you’re comfortable with them and feel safe sharing your thoughts and feelings with them. It’s okay to begin counseling with a professional and decide to try a new provider to see if they may be a better fit.

How long does therapy take?

There’s no set amount of time therapy should or might take. Each person is different and therefore, each process is different. While some therapy may be short-term to help address a specific experience in someone’s life, it can also be long-term to tackle ongoing or more complex concerns.

Depending on your experience and needs, we may begin with weekly sessions and decide together what treatment plan may be of most help to you.

Is medication a substitute for therapy?

While long-term solutions to emotional and mental concerns can’t be solved by medication alone, it may be helpful to combine medication and counseling to address certain patterns of behavior that stand in the way of progress.

What is your cancellation policy?

Sometimes things come up and that’s understandable. However, if this occurs, I ask that you please provide 24-hour notice ahead of your appointment. We may have other clients who would like to take your spot if it’s made available and this allows us to contact them. If you do not make your session or fail to cancel within 24 hours, a $158 fee will be charged to your account.
