Meet the Founder: Madison Sweet
A Mental Health Advocate
Madison is a licensed independent social worker (LISW), certified through Postpartum Support International (PSI), and a proud PSI Iowa board member. Her primary focus is providing holistic, trauma-informed support as you navigate daily challenges, including perinatal and postnatal life. Taking the step to begin is scary, so it’s her goal to give you a safe space where you can work together to identify concerns negatively impacting your life and help you process them in healthy ways.
The Birth of Bloom
She founded Bloom Women’s Wellness in 2021 after realizing there was a massive gap in mental health care available to women during the most challenging seasons of life. Since then, Bloom has grown into a therapy clinic offering comprehensive care to the community of Central Iowa.
Our Core Values
Inclusion + Growth + Advocacy + Authenticity + Hope + Collaboration
We believe that all women and birthing parents should have access to a new standard of perinatal mental health care and wellness. We are committed to celebrating and supporting our LGBTQIA+ community. We fight for racial justice and know that everyone is inherently worthy, regardless of immigration status. We understand that health and well-being exist in all shapes and sizes. We respect that decisions you make for your body are up to you. We foster inclusivity in every space we create and ableism has no place here.
Frequently Asked Questions
What insurance providers do you take?
We accept Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Midland’s Choice, Cigna, Health Partners, Tricare, and private pay clients. Because we believe that mental health care should be accessible, we are happy to work with you on a sliding fee scale.
Every insurance plan is different, so check with your provider to see if mental health coverage is included in yours. Look over your coverage thoroughly. You may also want to contact your insurance agent to verify your coverage. A few helpful questions are:
- What are the mental health benefits in my plan?
- What is the coverage amount per session?
- How many therapy sessions are covered under my plan?
- How much does my insurance plan pay for out-of-network providers?
- Does my plan require approval from a primary care physician?
Most health insurance companies provide in- and out-of-network benefits. Feel free to download our out-of-network insurance guide to help walk you through what to expect when checking your coverage, what information to have ready, questions to ask, and more.
How can therapy help?
The goal of therapy is to provide a safe space for someone to explore their experiences, feelings, and thoughts in order to find realistic solutions. Psychotherapy can also be helpful in treating mental health concerns such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, addictions, and psychotic disorders. However, it’s important to note that therapy can benefit people who do not suffer from any of these concerns. Daily conflicts and life stressors can be difficult to navigate and therapy can help you find the tools to use to deal with these things in a healthier way.
What concerns outside of pregnancy do you address?
Yes, we address concerns that are unrelated to pregnancy. We always say that we’re generalists first and specialists second. This means that we’re here for girls heading into teenhood; college-aged women; ladies established in their lives; mothers, women who wish to become mothers, women who don’t dream of having kids; and those who have navigated loss, trauma, marriage, divorce, and beyond.
How do I choose my mental health provider?
The first step in finding the right provider for you is to find the professional whose focus areas line up with the concerns you would like to address. Next, be prepared to check your potential provider’s background, including their education. Depending on the educational background of the provider, their titles will differ. For instance, most counselors or psychotherapists hold master’s or doctoral degrees in the psychology field and may include licensed mental health counselors (LMHC), psychologists, licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT), and licensed independent social workers (LISW).
One of the most important parts of finding the best counselor for you is that you’re comfortable with them and feel safe sharing your thoughts and feelings with them. It’s okay to begin counseling with a professional and decide to try a new provider to see if they may be a better fit.
How long does therapy take?
There’s no set amount of time therapy should or might take. Each person is different and therefore, each process is different. While some therapy may be short-term to help address a specific experience in someone’s life, it can also be long-term to tackle ongoing or more complex concerns.
Depending on your experience and needs, we may begin with weekly sessions and decide together what treatment plan may be of most help to you.
Is medication a substitute for therapy?
The Bloom team believes in a holistic approach to therapy, meaning we explore every aspect of what makes you who you are. While long-term solutions to emotional and mental concerns can’t be solved by medication alone, it may be helpful to combine medication and counseling to address certain patterns of behavior that stand in the way of progress.
Depending on your experience and needs, we may begin with weekly sessions and decide together what treatment plan may be of most help to you.
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
Great question! This one comes up a lot.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD or DO) specializing in mental health. They can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medications, and provide medical management of psychiatric symptoms. Psychiatrists often focus on the biological and neurological aspects of mental illness and may also provide brief therapy. The primary role of psychiatrists is usually medication management.
Psychologists typically hold a doctoral degree (PdD or PsyD) and specialize in understanding how people think, feel, and behave. They provide talk therapy (also known as psychotherapy) and can perform psychological testing to assess issues like ADHD, learning issues, mood disorders, and more. Psychologists do not prescribe medication but often collaborate with psychiatrists when medication is needed.
At Bloom, we have medication providers and a psychologist on our team to offer comprehensive, collaborative care because your mental health deserves both heart and science.
What is the Bloom Standard for diagnosing ADHD or autism?
Our Bloom Standard is a multi-step approach to diagnosing ADHD or autism that combines compassion with thorough diagnostic principles. These steps are as follows:
- Initial Therapy Intake
You and one of our experienced therapists meet to go over your concerns, discuss your background, and begin to understand any emotional and behavioral patterns impacting your daily life.
- Comprehensive Testing
You and our licensed psychologist will complete psychological testing, which includes validated assessments, clinical interviews, and behavior rating scales tailored toward you. Once completed, you’ll receive a diagnostic report that offers insight and guidance for moving forward.
- Medication Consultation (if needed)
If a diagnosis is confirmed and medication is being considered, you will meet with one of our medication providers to review results and discuss treatment options, including medication and non-medication strategies.
If you’d like to learn more, please read more about our Bloom Standard here.
How can I refill my prescription?
Head to our Prescription Refills page, read our refill policy, and complete the HIPAA release form.
To request a prescription refill, please contact Michelle, our registered nurse, by emailing her at medication@bloomwomenswellness.org or by calling her directly at (515)776-7859. You may also be directed to Michelle through our main line, (515)499-4959 (select “pharmacies”)
What is your cancellation policy?
Sometimes things come up and that’s understandable. However, if this occurs, we ask that you please provide 24-hour notice ahead of your appointment. We may have other clients who would like to take your spot if it’s made available and this allows us to contact them. If you do not make your session or fail to cancel within 24 hours, a $185 fee will be charged to your account.
All medication appointment cancellations require a notice of at least 48 business hours (two full business days). Cancellations under this timeframe will be subject to a fee.
Excessive cancellations and/or 3 or more no-shows/late cancellations will result in future sessions being canceled and termination of therapy and medication management services. Any repeated cancellations and/or no-show patients may be restricted from future bookings. If the balance on the account exceeds $100, you will not be able to schedule another appointment until it is taken care of and other arrangements are made.
What is your process for lab work at Bloom?
Our lab process is simple, supportive, and personalized.
1. Recommendation: Your provider suggests labs based on your symptoms and goals.
2. Testing: Complete your labs in-office, at a local lab, or at home (depending on the test).
3. Plan: You’ll receive a personalized care plan, which may include lifestyle support, supplements, and/or follow-up care.
We’re here to guide you through every step, so you feel informed, supported, and confident in your care.
