COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

A practical, evidence-based approach to understanding and changing the patterns that hold you back.

Bloom Women’s wellness

Your Thoughts, Feelings, and Actions Are All Connected.

CBT is built on a simple but powerful idea — that the way we think affects the way we feel, and the way we feel affects the way we act. When those patterns become unhelpful, they can be identified, challenged, and changed. At Bloom, CBT is delivered by licensed counselors who tailor every session to your unique story and goals.

What makes cbt worthwhile for you

A Structured Path to Real Change

Unlike some forms of therapy that focus primarily on the past, CBT is present-focused and goal-oriented. Sessions are collaborative and practical — you’ll leave with tools and strategies you can actually use between appointments, not just insights to sit with.

Over time, CBT helps you build a new relationship with your own thoughts — one where you’re no longer at the mercy of patterns that don’t serve you. It’s one of the most researched and effective forms of therapy available, and at Bloom it’s delivered with warmth, flexibility, and genuine care.

What to Expect

Sessions typically last 45–55 minutes and are available both in person at our Urbandale clinic and via telehealth. CBT tends to be more structured than other forms of therapy — your counselor will guide the conversation with intention while leaving plenty of room for you to lead.

Your first session is a chance to share what’s brought you in and begin building a relationship with your counselor. From there, you’ll work together to identify the thought patterns and behaviors you want to change and build a plan for doing so at a pace that feels manageable.

Many people begin to notice meaningful shifts within a few weeks. CBT is often shorter-term than other therapy approaches, though the timeline is always tailored to you.

What is CBT and how does it work?

CBT — Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. The core idea is that our thoughts, feelings, and actions are all connected. By learning to recognize and challenge negative patterns, you can begin to respond to life’s challenges in healthier, more grounded ways.

What concerns can CBT help with?

CBT is effective for anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, phobias, relationship stress, life transitions, low self-esteem, and more. It’s also a great fit for anyone who wants to build stronger coping skills and a healthier relationship with their own thoughts.

How long does CBT treatment typically take?

CBT is often shorter-term than other therapy approaches. Many people see meaningful progress in 8–20 sessions, though the timeline depends entirely on your individual goals and concerns. Your counselor will work with you to create a plan that fits your life.

Is CBT done in person or via telehealth?

Both options are available at Bloom. Many of our counselors offer telehealth sessions alongside in-person appointments at our Urbandale clinic. You can filter by session type when booking online.

Does Bloom accept insurance for CBT sessions?

Yes — we accept Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Midland’s Choice, Cigna, Health Partners, and Tricare. We directly bill your insurance carrier and you’ll be responsible for any applicable copays or coinsurance. Visit our Payment Options page for more details.

What if I don't have insurance or my plan doesn't cover therapy?

We believe mental health care should be accessible to everyone. We offer a sliding fee scale whenever possible, private pay options, and accept CareCredit for out-of-pocket expenses. Reach out to our billing coordinator Mitch at mitch@bloomwomenswellness.org to discuss your options.

Do I need a referral to start CBT at Bloom?

No referral needed — you can book directly through our online scheduling system. If you’re unsure whether CBT is the right fit, our team is happy to help point you in the right direction.
